Francis Ford Coppola spent three years filming Apocalypse Now (one of my two favorite films along with Fellini’s 8 1/2). The work print that Coppola assembled was 5 1/2 hours, and contained many interesting segments that were cut out of the film. Many of these would resurface in the reedit, Apocalypse Now Redux in 2001. One of the more interesting scenes cut from the film was a reading of T.S. Eliot’s “The Hollow Men” by Marlon Brando. I can completely understand why this was cut from the film, even though it is wholly appropriate to the tone and themes of the film and is interesting in its own. Regardless, it is still a beautiful rendition of the poem. This isn’t the scene from the film, but it is a creative visual presentation of the recital.

This is an interesting article reporting on a cocaine bar in La Paz, Bolivia. It is the only one of its kind in the world. I had heard about this from other travelers, but had never read about it or met anyone who has been. It sounds like a very dangerous destination, or at best, “shady”.

It doesn’t get more amazing than this:
In the 1970s, network television had even less respect for their viewers than they do today. In 1979, a show called Supertrain premiered. It would only last 9 episodes. It was about a futuristic train that was nuclear powered and could travel from NYC to LA in 36 hours. The train contained a mall, exquisite restaurants, and every other luxury you could want. The producers had attempted to model the show after The Love Boat with episodes being about various passengers.
It really must be seen to be believed:
And here is the first part of the first episode:

What kind of animal walks into a Walmart and pees all over the steaks in the freezer?
This man:

It appears, even the Avatar’s were not able to fend off Cultural and Economic Imperialism on their home planet:

I was the age of 9, twenty years ago, when I watched the debut. This has become a pretty significant part of my life despite the fact that I pretty much quit watching after Season 9. I catch a new episode every once in a while, and even though there might be a laugh or two, it obviously isn’t the show that it began as. Still, happy 20th birthday (not including the Ullman skits).
